Filters inside Gmail are used to automatically move emails to labels or auto-forward them to a different account based on criteria such as Subject Line, who they come from, and who they're directed to.
For example, if you're signed up for a newsletter but don't want it going to your inbox directly. You can setup a label for all of your newsletter emails and have a filter send the emails directly there.
