For regular non Google-Docs file types you have to keep track of new versions in a slightly different way.

  1. Go to drive.google.com.
  2. Right-click the file.
  3. Click Manage versions.
  4. Click More More icon.
  5. Click Download to save a copy to your computer.
Only the most recent versions of past documents will be saved, unless you click Keep forever.
